Reauthorization of the NSA telephony metadata program in December 2014

On December 4, 2014, the FISC issued an order renewing the telephony metadata program for another 90 days until February 27, 2015, subject to the changes announced by President Obama in January 2014. In a Joint Statement, the Director of National Intelligence (“DNI”) and the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) announced that “The Administration welcomes the opportunity to work with the new Congress to implement the changes the President has called for [in regard to ending the government’s storage of bulk telephony metadata]. Given that legislation has not yet been enacted, and given the importance of maintaining the capabilities of the telephony metadata program, the government has sought a 90-day reauthorization of the existing program…”
